The national flag of Benin was originally adopted in 1960. When the Marxist government took power in 1975, a new flag was adopted. Once that regime collapsed and Benin was reestablished in 1990, the original flag was readopted. The color red stands for courage and the blood spilled during Benin’s struggle for independence. Yellow represents wealth while green stands for hope.
