Description

Cape Hatteras Light is a lighthouse on Hatteras Island in Buxton, NC. Originally, it was constructed in 1802 by order of Congress. The original lighthouse was deemed ineffective by mariners and was damaged during the Civil War. In 1871, a new Cape Hatteras Light was constructed. However, the receding shoreline caused it to close in 1935. In 1950, the latest incarnation was constructed, but it was later moved in 1999 due to additional beach erosion. Today, visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse and visit the adjacent museum.
