Description

Frying Pan Lake was renamed as Waimangu Cauldron back in 1963. It is one of the largest hot pools in the world. Due to volcanic activity, the larger crater within Echo Crater filled with hot springs between 1917 and 1918. With an average temperature of 131°F, the lake is usually steaming. At times, it appears to be boiling as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gas bubble up to the surface.
