Description

The Herculaneum used to be an ancient city in the Roman Empire. The city was destroyed in the year 79 AD after Mt. Vesuvius erupted, famously destroying the city of Pompeii as well. Despite being destroyed, large portions of the city ended up becoming preserved underneath all of the ash from the volcano. Because of the name, historians believe the city had some sort of connection with the legendary Greek hero, Hercules.
