The flag of Latvia was originally adopted in 1918, then banned by the USSR in 1940, and again adopted in 1990 a year before Latvia gained independence from the USSR. The maroon color stands for blood shed both in the past and future in the struggle to attain freedom. Used in battle back in 1279, history shows the Latvian flag to be one of the oldest in the world.
