Description

One of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World was the Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Lighthouse of Pharos. It stood on an island off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt, called Pharos. Alexandria was founded by Alexander the Great. When he died, Ptolemy Soter became the new Egyptian ruler. He authorized the construction of the first lighthouse. It also became known as the tallest construction of the time, other than the Great Pyramid.
