The Sea of Japan is part of the Pacific Ocean. Although connected to many bodies of water, the almost elliptical sea is nearly totally surrounded by land. Other bodies of water are accessed through various straits that connect to it. However, the northern Tatar Strait occasionally freezes, blocking, or restricting access by water from that region.
