Description

The Colossus of Rhodes was an enormous statue that stood on the island of Rhodes and was completed in 280 BC. It was among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. According to ancient texts, its base was marble. The body of the statue was an amalgamation of stone, iron and bronze. It somewhat resembled a much larger version of the Statue of Liberty. Its purpose was to thank the Gods for allowing Rhodes to survive a major battle that took place prior to its construction. It no longer stands due to an earthquake that occurred approximately half a century after its construction.
