Description
Different portions of the Urubamba River go by other names, including Vilcanota River and Vilcamayo River. Those names are believed to be variations of phrases meaning “house of the sun” and “sacred river,” respectively. The river runs past the ancient city of Machu Picchu, which was constructed by the Incas. Several Inca artifacts have been found in and around the Urubamba.
